NEWS LETTER - JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2007

From the Director
Hello everyone. The past three months have gone by fast. I would like to take this time to thank Greg Alexander for all his help this past year in the role of Treasurer. Our exhibitions have all been well received by visitors with plenty of positive comments. There is one thing that I know this gallery could use now more then ever. We are in need of membership participation. Without this I know the gallery will suffer. We have lost our operating grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. This only represented $10,000 in annual funding; however with the size of our gallery, it represents a significant amount. The plus side of this is that we are now eligible for CC Project Grants. There are two deadlines for this grant, April 15 and September 15 and they are worth $15,000 each. So, hypothetically we have access to more money now then before. The reality is that without your contribution helping create projects for these grants, they cannot happen. I would like to hear from every member about any creative projects that you might like to take on. I would be happy to help in any way I can. So everyone put your thinking caps on and let’s keep this most important institution alive for another 30 years. What do you say? I am personally interested in “Art Outside Walls” Contemporary Public Art. If you would like to contribute, please come in and see me. You can also mail or email your contributions to the gallery.

Who Said It?

Aphorisms from 1914-1915
“Everything has appearance and essence, shell and kernel, mask and truth. What does it say against the inward determination of things that we finger the shell without reaching the kernel, that we live with appearance instead of perceiving the essence, that the mask of things so blinds us that we cannot find the truth?”

BOARD RECRUITMENT

The White Water Gallery is currently seeking representatives to serve on the Board of Directors. This is a volunteer position that requires a commitment of approximately 2 – 8 hours per month. Individuals with a variety of skills and artistic interests are encouraged to step forward. Members from the larger Blue Sky Region are particularly welcome.

At present we need individuals who have experience in grant writing. The gallery’s survival will depend on our ability to apply for specific project grants. We also need someone with financial and book keeping skills to act as out treasurer.  Becoming a Board Member can be a rewarding position. You can have a direct say into what the gallery will evolve into over the next few years. Adding “Board Member” to your resume increases your credibility with potential employers or school registrars. There is a great potential for personal growth, social contact, artistic involvement and leadership experience.

MEMBER RECRUITMENT

We need help from the general membership to assist in fundraising committees such as the 2007 Make Your Mark event and the 2007 Art-a-thon. If anyone out there understands Quick Books or a comparable software accounting package, we would love to hear from you. Interested volunteers or potential Board Members are encouraged to call Dan at the Gallery (476-2444) or Allan Hirsh (476-2219).

My art practice finds its roots in small, personal objects that can be held or touched. I like the intimacy of these objects and their potential to elicit both an emotional and intellectual discourse. I am also interested in the manipulation of diverse and often disparate materials, the relationship objects have with one another and the physical and psychological space they occupy. August 4 - 25, 2007. Opening reception: Saturday, August 4 , 2 to 4 p.m.

Karen takes her art practice into the community, interviewing locals about their dreams. For more information go to: http://dreamlistener.wordpress.com. September 8 – 20, 2007. Opening reception: Saturday, September 8, 2 to 4 p.m.
